is this an accurate statistic?

hi.
i'm wesley.
i just joined to ask this question.
i was looking on craigs list for jobs in the et cetera catagory and there was a heading for study participants.
the heading read"one out of evey four women have genital herpes."

this is the lead sentence.
"Symptoms of genital herpes are often subtle. In fact, 90% of those infected are unaware. "

i have had almost no sexual contact with a partner for seven years and i begin to think that is a good thing.

peace,
wesley,

Here is some info I have found.....

Prevalence: More than one in five Americans - 45 million people - are infected with genital herpes.
    www.smartersex.org/stis/herpes.asp

Genital Herpes: Breaking the Silence -- Terri Warren, RN, ANP -- 1/14/200
Almost one out of every five people in the U.S. has genital herpes, but shame keeps many of them quiet.
    my.webmd.com/content/art...80/96422.htm

    Everything About Herpes
"90% of those who are infected do not know that they are and would deny having genital herpes."
    my.webmd.com/content/art...49/39847.htm

Where can I get more information about herpes on the web that is accurate?

    www.webmd.com
www.ashastd.org has info not only about herpes but other STDs as well
www.westoverheights.com has a small book about herpes that you can download without charge
www.viridae.com has very good info about herpes as well
www.gotstd.com is a place to meet others with herpes
www.herpeshomepage.com has herpes info and also a link with a pharmacy for cheaper prices on antiviral medication
www.POCkit.com lists healthcare providers in your area who do the POCkit test for HSV II

America Online has at least five herpes chats -- search their chats area for specifics.

    --------------------------------

    STI Stats

One in five people in the United States has an STI

Two-thirds of all STIs occur in people 25 years of age or younger

Cervical cancer in women is linked to Human Papillomavirus

Hepatitis B is 100 times more infectious than HIV

STIs, other than HIV, cost about $8 billion each year to diagnose and treat

One in five Americans have genital herpes, yet at least 80 percent of those with herpes are unaware they have it

At least one in four Americans will contract an STI at some point in their lives

Human Papillomavirus is the most common STI in the United States

More than 5 million people are infected with HPV each year

Less than half of adults ages 18 to 44 have ever been tested for an STI other than HIV/AIDS

At least 15 percent of all infertile American women are infertile because of tubal damage caused by pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), the result of an untreated STI

Two-thirds of Hepatitis B (HBV) infections are transmitted sexually and are linked to chronic liver disease, including cirrhosis and liver cancer

    .......hope that helps!
